Two years ago, we started providing our Saltydog members with a new piece of analysis highlighting funds that have performed consistently well over a longer timescale than we usually consider.

As trend investors, we normally focus on the short term. Each week, we issue new reports showing how a wide range of funds have performed over the last few weeks and months.

We believe that the overall performance of the Investment Association sectors reflects what is happening in the wider economy, and that different sectors will emerge at the top of our tables as the geopolitical landscape changes.

It is then relatively straightforward to find the leading funds in these sectors. This information is designed to help make sure your portfolio is always invested in the best-performing funds from the best-performing sectors.

Although this system works well for investors who enjoy reviewing their portfolios on a weekly basis, we appreciate that there are a considerable number of people who do not believe that they have the time to take this approach.

That is why we developed our ‘6 x 6 report’ (updated every three months), where we identify funds that have performed at a consistently high level in each of the six-month periods over the last three years. Ideally, they will have achieved a return of at least 5% in all six periods.

Last November, the Smith and Williamson Global Artificial Intelligence fund appeared at the top of our report covering the three years from the beginning of November 2017 to the end of October 2020.

In the last report, up to February 2021, no funds had hit the target in all six periods, but this time five feature. The Smith and Williamson Global Artificial Intelligence fund has been renamed the Sanlam Artificial Intelligence fund and is second on the list, behind Fidelity Global Technology. Then there is another technology fund, L&G Global Technology Index, and finally two funds from the North American sector: Janus Henderson US Growth and Ninety One American Franchise.

The top three funds have all gone up by more than 100% in the last three years.
