Welcome to the first issue of Saver > Investor Magazine, and congratulations on taking an important step towards financial independence.

A little over ten years ago, the team behind Saver > Investor launched DIY Investor Magazine to deliver insight and information to experienced investors and education to those new to investing.

We believed that people would inevitably have to take more personal financial responsibility as self-reliance replaced state support.

Our belief was well-founded; from an estimated 2.3 m self-directed investors in 2014, a recent survey by Boring Money identified that there are now more than 12 m DIY investing accounts in the UK and rising.

Online technology powered the DIY investing boom with access to data and markets previously the preserve of shouty men in red braces; depending upon how hands-on you wanted to be, with a nod to Nike we coined the phrase ‘Do it Yourself, Do it With me, Do it For me – just don’t do nothing!’

However, it became increasingly clear that despite the financial services industry’s claim to have democratised investing, a huge number of people are stuck in savings products that are losing the value of their money in real terms due to the corrosive effect of inflation, but lacking the knowledge and confidence to turn to investing.

Over almost any time horizon, stock market investing delivers better returns than cash saving, but in innumerable surveys, by far the most common reason people cite for not investing is the fear of losing their money.

Poor financial literacy is preventing literally millions of people from benefitting from becoming investors, but with uncertainty about the future of the state pension, health and later life care, improved financial education is an imperative; that is what Saver > Investor is for.

Risk is at the heart of the debate, and in addition to demystifying and debunking investing is one of the things we want to look at afresh. By definition, investing involves risk and whilst interminable risk disclaimers may keep Compliance happy, our focus will be on probability – what is the likelihood that a product will enable you to achieve your financial goals and what is the real chance of it blowing up?

Shucking off the burden of fear can allow a clearer focus on the possibilities delivered by the ‘miracle’ of compound interest, and rules of thumb such as those involving eggs and baskets, or timing markets start to make sense.

Saver > Investor will deliver content in a way that is accessible and engaging; it will broadly divide between entry level ‘Explainers’, real life ‘Experience’ and industry leading ‘Expert’.

Snackable video where possible.

Widely expected to play an increasing part in our financial lives, AI has phenomenal number-crunching capability, but Experience is about real people, with real goals and real money – and emotions; there will be someone just like you.

Saver > Investor is already hard at work delivering education and content to the 1.2 m members of SAYE schemes administered by our partners at Equiniti, ensuring those exiting schemes are confident and competent investors on a quest to ‘get rich slow’.

The scale of the challenge and the opportunity is in that there are currently 14.4 m adults in the UK only with Cash ISAs, which are currently in the crosshairs of the Chancellor; not that Cash ISAs are ‘bad’ but introducing some stock market investments could boost returns over time.

That, of course, requires improved financial education.
