August has been a rebound month for gold, with prices reaching above $4,400, as a weaker US dollar and shifting expectations around interest rates support demand for the precious metal.

With prices rising again after months of volatility, Rick Kanda, Managing Director at The Gold Bullion Company, has shared insights into the factors causing an uplift in gold prices, along with predictions for the remainder of 2026.

  • The current gold price

At the time of commenting, gold is trading at $4,460.52 / oz in US Dollars. This recent increase in gold price is significant because it shows just how quickly sentiment towards the precious metal can change. This should remind investors that gold is a highly volatile asset and that they should not focus solely on the current price in isolation.

  • The factors causing an uplift in gold prices

After falling below $4,000/oz earlier this year, the precious metal has recovered significantly. The latest rally has been supported by a weaker US dollar and falling Treasury yields, following the US Treasury’s announcement that it would increase its buybacks of long-dated government bonds. Gold is priced in US dollars, so a weaker dollar means it takes more dollars to buy the same ounce, pushing the price higher. It also makes gold cheaper for buyers outside the US, including in the UK, which adds to demand.

Another factor behind the recent rally has been inflation data. On one hand, US inflation figures have eased, but on the other, UK inflation has risen slightly, which shows the global inflation rate remains mixed. With that said, expectations around interest rates will continue to be an important driver for the gold price.

  • Predictions for the remainder of 2026

I expect further fluctuations for the remainder of 2026; investors should prepare for further volatility but have confidence in gold remaining well supported. I’d recommend investors keep a close eye on the direction of interest rates. If we continue to see weakness in the US dollar, lower or stable interest rates, as well as ongoing geopolitical uncertainty, gold will likely continue increasing in price.

However, looking at the factors currently influencing gold price, I would expect the precious metal to continue experiencing sharp gains and pullbacks rather than a straightforward upward trend.
