Pensions tax relief to be slashed?

With much speculation on whether the Chancellor will go after pensions tax relief, please see the following comment from Charlotte Sallabank, tax partner at law firm Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP:
“There is much speculation about whether Rachel Reeves is considering slashing pensions tax relief in order to generate more money for the Treasury.
If the Chancellor were indeed to withdraw pension relief at source, this would be a lucrative move and more subtle than increasing tax rates. It seems to me that the continued freeze on tax thresholds is inevitable. Other than these two moves I cannot see that she has many other options available to her, given her stated promise to adhere to the fiscal rules and not increase rates of income tax, employee’s NIC and VAT. Wealth taxes, though on the face of it more acceptable to labour voters, rarely bring in the projected revenues and often ultimately result in a reduction in tax take.”
